Claud
New York, NY
Joshua Pinksy and Chase Sinzer, who worked together for years at David Chang's Momofuku Ko, opened their restaurant and wine bar in Greenwhich village. Claud is inspired by the European style of dining and seeks to replicate that vibe here in New York City.
For the brand identity, we were inspired by Abstract expressionism, a movement developed by American artists like Agnes Martin and Cy Twombly in the 1940s and 50s that is dear to Claud's founders and rooted in New York City's history. Characterized by gestural brush-strokes, mark-making, and the impression of motion and spontaneity, the movement's name evokes the desire to make art that while abstract, remains emotive in its effect.
The food at Claud follows similar principals; devoid of any constrictive labels, it is inspired but never so cerebral that guests leave without a sensual imprint of their meal. In many ways, Pinsky's strives to succeed at simplicity, with an emphasis on consistency and pleasure over concept and trends. In Claud's owners words: “you wouldn’t know it was there but you’d miss it if it was gone.”
